I’m doing this article on homelessness in New
York. I’m framing the article around a
recent city decision that states that homeless shelters cannot take donated
food. According to health officials, it's
impossible to gauge the items' salt, fiber, and other nutritional stats. A Huffington Post article from last week
said, “Bloomberg huffed, ‘For the things that we run because of all sorts of
safety reasons, we just have a policy it is my understanding of not taking
donations.’" I also have an
interview today with a volunteer from WIN, Women in Need, inc. WIN has been around since 1983 and
specializes and helping homeless women and children (who apparently make up
most of the percentage of homeless people).
I also have some stats about homelessness in New York City from
Coalition for the Homeless that show the rise in homeless shelters since 1993,
as well as, who the people living in them are.
